Matisse meets Haring

In this lesson we combine Keith Haring and Henri Matisse.

Benodigdheden:

  1. white drawing sheet
  2. colored construction paper
  3. black construction paper
  4. scissors
  5. glue
Show some of the later artwork from Matisse (fauvism, 1869-1954), his cut-outs and discuss them. What do you see? What shapes did Matisse use? What are the organic shapes? And the geometric shapes? What's the difference between them? What colors do you see?

Look at the human figures in Keith Harings artwork (popart, 1958-1990). What stands out? How are human beings drawn? Which parts of the body do you see, which parts nog? How do you see that people are moving?

What to do?

  1. Cut organic and geometric shapes from colored paper.
  2. Cut a human figure from black paper,  (do not draw first!). Be sure you can clearly see he's moving.
  3. Arrange the geometric and organic shapes on the white sheet. Overlap is allowed.
  4. Search for a good place where the human figure fits well and where you can see he's moving, for example because he steps on a geometric shape or dances between the organic shapes.
  5. Satisfied about your composition? Then glue on all the cut out shapes .

Wire portrait like Alexander Calder

made by teacher Wouter

During a study day on art education our teachers made portraits of wire. This can also be done in higher grades. If you want to make wire figures in lower grades, then choose a simpler shape, for example fruit/veggies or an animal.

This activity can be done in a lesson about Alexander Calder, known for his wire portraits and mobiles.

You need:

  1. 3 meters wire thickness 1,3 mm
  2. wire cutter
  3. printed selfie 30 by 40 cm
  4. black marker
  5. painters tape

Take a picture of yourself and print it.

Outline your face, eyes, nose, mouth and hair using the black marker. Turn the sheet over, the lines can be seen on the back of it now.

Wrap 3 m of wire around your fingers into a bunch.

Start at the neck. Lay the wire flat on the photo and follow the lines of your face. Try to lay out the portrait without cutting the wire. If this doesn't work out, you may smuggle by cutting the wire and go on with a new piece. Give the portrait more strength by doubling the wire on some places. Stick the wire now and then on the photo with painters tape.

Finished? Remove the pieces of tape. Fix the places where wire comes up by making connections with small pieces of wire. See detail photo.

  3. 1 sheet colored construction paper from which you cut 7 cm
  4. 1 sheet blue construction paper
  5. leftovers of colored paper
  6. glue
  7. scissors
  8. black marker

Who is Matisse?

Matisse (1869 –1954) was a French artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was primarily known as a painter.

Matisse didn't care if stones were blue, he just chose the colors he liked. Some people thought is art was very ugly: someone who paints blue faces and green noses is a fool and Matisse was called 'Fauve', which means: wild. This is how the word Fauvism came into being for this art movement, art with bold colors.

After a surgery Matisse spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. He wasn't able to paint anymore, but could still paint with his scissors.

View various artworks of Matisse.

Then few the artwork Oasis. What stands out?

  • no straigh lines
  • organic shapes
  • bright colors
  • What is an oasis and why is this artwork called so?
How to make it

Step 1
Take the two colored sheets: a whole one and one with 7 cm cut off. Paste the smaller sheet on the large one. The strip at the bottom is the table for the fishbowl.

Step 2
Cut Matisse shapes and glue them on the small sheet. Let them fall of the sheet and cut away the outer pieces.

Step 3
Fold a white sheet in half on the long side and cut out a fishbowl. The center line of the bowl is the fold of the sheet. Trace around the bowl with a thick black marker.

Step 4
Cut 'water' out of the blue sheet, slightly smaller than the bowl. Paste it in the bowl. Paste the bowl on the colored sheet with organic shapes.

Step 5
Cut two or three fishes and some water plants and paste them in the bowl.

Elements of art: shape, color.

On Monet's bridge

You need:

  1. drawing sheet A3 size
  2. tempera paint
  3. brushes
  4. white construction paper
  5. scissors
  6. oilpastels

Claude Monet (1840-1926) is considered one of the most important painters of Impressionism.

 Typical for Impressionists:

  • they choose subjects from ordinary life
  • special attention for light and color
  • work in the open air
  • smooth brushstrokes
  • dashes resemble a sketch
  • it's about the impression!

Discuss the term impressionism. Show some paintings by Monet and zoom in on a work with water lilies in Arts & Culture. Do students see the characteristics of impressionism in this artwork?

Monet had a large garden with a pond and a Japanese bridge in Giverny France. He liked to paint in that garden. His works of water lilies are therefore famous and are the basis of this lesson.

Lesson 1
Draw a horizon line above the middle of your sheet. Paint the pond and the sky with short brush strokes, like Monet did. Do not mix the paint, but take two colors on your brush.  Make sure the blue color of the pond is not the same color as the sky.
Paint trees on both sides of the sheet in the same way. Paint water lilies in the pond. Be sure that they are larger in the front of the pond than in the back.

Lesson 2
Have someone take a picture of you that shows you all the way. Print the photo and cut it out.
Cut three parallel arcs from about 1,5 cm wide from the construction paper.  Then cut four straight pieces of 1,5 cm wide. Paste the photo on the work and paste the bridge over it.

Water lilies on a plate

By a student of grade 1

Claude Monet (1840-1926) is considered one of the most important painters of Impressionism.

 Typical for Impressionists:

  • they choose subjects from ordinary life
  • special attention for light and color
  • work in the open air

You need:
  1. paper plates
  2. tempera paint in blue and white
  3. stencil brush
  4. white drawing sheet
  5. tissue paper in green an light green

Paint like an impressionist

This lesson is an exercise for painting an impressionist work.

You need:
  1. white drawing sheet
  2. tempera paint in red, blue and yellow
  3. small brushes
  4. paper towels
View impressionist paintings, for example from Claude Monet or Van Gogh. Zoom into Starry Night from Van Gogh using this link
What do you see?
  • the painting is made out with loose dashes.
  • the dashes indicate a direction or movement, they are not just placed.
  • you can see the canvas between the dashes. The color of the canvas is therefore part of the painting.
View a sunset picture.

What do you see?
  • the sun is reflected in the water
  • the sun's rays point left, up and right
  • the horizon is half way the photograph
Exercise before you get started:
  • Practice painting short strokes on a scrap. To do this, always lift the brush from the paper.
  • Practice with two colors on your brush; do not mix!
  • Make narrow / wide strokes by turning / not turning your brush.
  • Clean the brush for a new color with a paper towel, do not use water!
And now the artwork:

  • Fold your drawing sheet in half lengthwise, this is the horizon line.
  • Draw with pencil a semicircle on the horizon line, this is the sun.
  • Paint the sun orange: apply red and yellow to your brush. Do not mix!
  • Paint the sun's rays with yellow and very little red. Put something on your brush of both colors and make short strokes by lifting the brush from the paper each time. Also leave white between the strokes.
  • Also make the reflection of the sun in the water. Beware: the direction of the brushstrokes is now horizontal, just like the water.
  • Make the sky with blue and white (again add two colors to the brush). Use white to make a lighter blue. Follow the direction of the sun's rays. Don't make the sky completely full, you have to keep seeing paper.
  • Paint the sea with blue, white (and maybe green). Do not mix! The direction is horizontal here. Think of the white space between the lines.

Transport in the style of Hundertwasser

Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) was an Austrian artist and architect who is best known for the colorful buildings he designed, built with attention to the environment and natureThe buildings of Hundertwasser are very recognizablestraight lines are missingthere is use of bright colors and many of his buildings have typical turrets. The influence of architect Gaudi is obvious.

The paintings of Hundertwasser have exuberant colours too and mainly undulating lines.

Show buildings of Hundertwasser on the digital board. Discuss the salient  features: bright coloursundulating linesThen show some paintings and discuss the things that stand out:

the use of small areas outlined with black

no straight lines, usually parallel lines

 recurring spiral shapes

 bright colours

Tell students they are going to draw means of transport in the style of Hundertwasser.

You need:

  1. drawing sheet

  2. pencil

  3. markers

Draw a car, plane, boat or something you think is a mean of transport. Fill it with lines and patterns like Hundertwasser did. Cut your drawing and paste all means of transport on a great colored sheet.

In the style of Henrique Matos

You need:

  1. white drawing sheet A4 size

  2. liquid water colour

  3. jar with water

  4. compasses

  5. ruler

  6. pencil

  7. black waterproof markers

Henrique José Teixeira Matos is a Portugese painter. He is born in 1961 in Oporto.  Matos painted landscapes, portraits and abstract works, but is best known for his op-art work.

Show pictures of Matos's work on Wikimedia Commons. Look especially the op-art works and discuss what you see.

More op-art lessons on this blog can be seen following the link Op-art.

Paint a white sheet of paper with liquid watercolour and a lot of water a plain background.

Drip some liquid water colour on the surface while it is still wet. Use more water if the colours won't flow. Leave the sheet to dry.

Use compasses to draw some small circles (2 cm average) on the sheet. Draw wider circkels around them. Fill the sheet with those circles and half ones near the edges.

Draw lines from the middle of the circles to the edges. Be sure it's an even number of lines and  Kkeep the lines as much as possible equidistant from each other. Color the squares alternating with a black marker or pencil.
